Knott End & Pilling Sands
Land Kiting Knott End & PIlling Sands are quite simply one of the best locations in the country for land kiting IF you can catch the beach when it's dry! For this to happen the ideal conditions would be an early high tide and a little sun. So a little planning is required if you intend to travel a long way for a session. The sand surface is hard packed and butter smooth and extends for around 32mk2 (although there are a few deep channels) The beach will work in any wind direction due to low lying land mass and the amount of space available. Keep your eye on the tide though as due to the flat sand tides come in real fast. The beach is not used by many people and is a very safe place to play just watch out for the odd microlight aircraft as they tend to land and take off on the beach. Access to and from te beach can be gained at one of a number of breaks in the sea defence but probably the best access is at Knott End, opposite the Spar in town. It's probably worth parking in town though as the road is residential. Kitesurfing Kitesurfing is possible but you tend to lose the safe launch and landing areas at High Tide. In summer the tide rarely comes up this far unless it's on a Spring tide. If you do catch the water it's glassy flat and shallow for miles! Be aware of the speed of the incoming - outgoing tide though as it can catch you unawares and cause a huge walk back to the car! Other Information: You can catch a ferry from / to Fleetwood (except at low tides) and they'll charge you for a bike if you take the buggy on, (£1.50). Plenty of Cafe's and take away's at Knott End but not much in the way of camp sites. You can no longer park the car on the beach as Wyre Borough Council have an enforced ban on motorised vehicles on the sands. Click here for map! When we filmed this back in 2004 you were allowed to drive on the beach but please be aware that you are no longer allowed to do this and could get towed by the Police / Council!
