The Sand Bar - Rossall / Fleetwood
Land Kiting The Sand bar at Fleetwood can be an exciting and adventurous experience as such it shouldn't be attempted by the novice buggy / landboard pilot. traversing to the sand bar can be achieved by leaving from the "point" where there is a cafe called the Log Cabin and free parking (height restricted though), from here it's a quick hop over the dunes and the prommenade to the beach. Or you can go from Fleetwood-Marine Beach out onto the sand bar. Either way the journey is lumpy and depending on what the tide has done to the beach can be like the surface of the moon only with water! A true buggy / board challenge. Tides need to be carefully figured out for the journey and if your not sure then ring us 01253 870 000. You need a tide that's just gone out to maximise your time on the sandbar and to give you a safe margin to walk back if the wind drops or changes direction. Best wind dierections are NNW / NW / W / NNE / NE / E Once on the sand bar though your efforst will be rewarded, no one around for miles, clear hard packed smooth sand and you can even play with the sea on the Northerly side. Kitesurfing A true gem of a spot, when the tide's out at Fleetwood the sandbar & point still work fine and it even works on a SSW saving the drive through Blackpool's traffic down the coast to Lytham & Starr Gate. various access points are used, the Log Cabin Cafe (see above), the car park by the NHS trust building on the sea road towards Cleveleys, the car park near the Vue Cinema & Skate Park at Cleveleys (go to the end of the no through road) are all great points to access this stretch. Don't kitesurf along this bit of coastline at hight tides though as the sea comes up to the sea wall and you lose a safe launch / land area. The Sandbar offers some superb waves in the right conditions (SW/W/N swell's) and the best wave conditions are probably a SW swell and a Westerly wind. The rest of the beach down towards the stricken "Riverdance" ferry are all good but be aware of strong tidal currents and submerged rocks and of course the breakwaters. The area around the "Riverdance" ferry is restricted though so if you're here you will be pursued by the Coastguard / Police! for map click here!
